Kennisnet Federation

Kennisnet is the public ICT-partner in dutch education. The Kennisnet Federation unites educatioal institutes with suppliers of educational services. The name of the platform where these parties are linked to, is called Entree. Entree provides users with the infrastructure to enable single sign on to educational services from their school account., while suppliers maintain control over who is allowed access tot heir services.

Entree and OpenASelect

The Entree platform used to based on the Open Source platform OpenASelect. It has its roots in A-Select., the platform that was used for DigiD, the service  that the dutch government uses for citizens to authenticate to public services. When the company that was responsible for OpenASelect was sold, the new owner of OpenASelect removed the sources and community from the internet.

Open Source or Commercial?

Kennisnet was facing the choice to either move on with Open Source OpenASelect or migrate to a commercial platform for its authentication and authorization services. In 2012, Kennisnet did extensive market research that focussed on cost and flexibility. It became clear that choosing an Open Source solution would reduce operational cost with about a million euro’s. On top of that, Kennisnet realized that the dependency on one supplier for product development reduced flexibility, something that is very important because of the changing environment that makes up for the educational cooperations that are realized through the Kennisnet Federation.

Cozmanova

In 2012, Cozmanova has been one of the founders of Asimba, to continue OpenASelect as Open Source project and maintain its availability. The Asimba source code is part of the core of Kennisnet Federation, and because of this fact it was an obvious choice for Kennisnet to migrate to Asimba. Cozmanova has succesfully completed the migration to Asimba on the 15th of april 2013. The project ensures continuity and cost savings for the future.

Open Source of commercieel?

Over Asimba
